Filing of Patent Applications in relation to National Core Technologies such as Secondary Batteries

Filing of Patent Applications in relation to National Core Technologies such as Secondary Batteries, etc. suddenly increased 13.6% on average

While overall filings of patent applications in Korea in the first half of this year increased 4.1% compared to the same period last year*, filing of patent applications in relation to national core technologies** such as secondary batteries, etc. increased 13.6%, which is three times more than for overall filings patent application.

* (First half year of 2022: 103,437 cases → (first half year of 2023) 107,693cases (▲4.1)

** National core technology: technologies in 12 fields such as electric/electronics (secondary batteries),

semiconductors, information and communications (digital communications), etc.

<Status of application filings in relation to national core technologies (based on from January to June 2023)>

The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) analyzed domestic patent application filings received in the first half of 2023 (approximately 170,000 cases) by 35 top technology fields of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and announced on September 17th their results that the filing of patent applications increased, centering around main national core technologies such as secondary batteries, semiconductors and digital communications, etc.

<Status of TOP 10 technical fields increasing in patent applications (based on from January to June 2023)>

Looking at the details of the increases by technical field, it can be seen that our future national core technologies have driven the greatest increase among patent application filings in the first half of 2022 such as for secondary batteries (8,660 cases, ▲11.5), semiconductors (6,580 cases, ▲15.5), digital communications (5,110 cases, ▲15.1), etc.

The secondary battery field, which has seen the most patent applications filed among all technical fields with 8,660 cases, shows a high increase of 11.5%, which is an increase of 890 cases compared to the same period of last year (from January to June).

By type of applicant, there was an increase in the number of filings by major companies (2,803 cases, ▲22.3) and mid-sized and small-sized enterprises, while universities and public research institutions also showed a high rate of increase (995 cases, ▲31.3).

<Status of patent application filings by type of applicant in secondary batteries field

(based on totals from January to June 2023)>

Among applicants, LG Energy Solution, Ltd. and Samsung SDI Co., Ltd., etc. filed many patent applications. Especially, the rate of increase for cases filed by the TOP 5 applicants in the field of secondary batteries rose 21.6% compared to last year, and this increase also continued into the first half of 2023, which shows a dramatic increase of 43.6% compared to the same period of last year*.

* According to the publication principle (should be published one year and six months after a patent is filed), the number of filings by corporations cannot yet be known.

In relation to this, according to a report from the Korea International Trade Association, the scale of exports of secondary batteries (cathode materials) in the first half of this year in Korea was USD7,490,000,000, which is a 66% increase compared to the same period of last year.

6,580 applications in the field of semiconductors were filed, which is a 15.5% increase and 881 cases more than in the same period last year. By type of applicant, major companies (3,209 cases, ▲33.5), mid-sized and small-sized enterprises (848 cases, ▲16.5), and universities and public research institutions all showed increases (395 cases, ▲14.8).

<Status of patent application filings in the field of semiconductors by type of applicant

(based on totals from January to June 2023)>

Among applicants, LG Energy Solution, Ltd. and Samsung SDI Co., Ltd., etc. filed a large amount of patent applications. Especially, the rate of increase for cases filed by the TOP 5 applicants in the field of semiconductors rose 37.6% compared to last year *.

* According to the publication principle (should be published one year and six months after a patent is filed), the number of filings by corporations cannot yet be known.

Also, 5,110 applications were filed in relation to digital communications, which is a 15.1% increase compared to the 672 applications filed over the same period last year. By type of applicant, major companies (2,193 cases, ▲38.0), mid-sized and small-sized enterprises (720 cases, ▲4.5), and universities and public research institutions (530 cases, ▲7.7) showed increases.

<Status of patent application filings in the field of digital communications by the type of applicant

(based on totals from January to June 2023)>

Among applicants, LG Energy Solution, Ltd. and Samsung SDI Co., Ltd., etc. filed many patent applications. Especially, the rate of increase for cases filed by the TOP 5 applicants in the field of digital communications rose 39.1% compared to last year*.

* According to the publication principle (should be published one year and six months after a patent is filed), the number of filings by corporations cannot yet be known.

This increase in patent applications in major national core technology fields is analyzed as a result of Korean companies accelerating their efforts to secure patent rights to maintain leadership in cutting-edge technologies that will lead the future, such as secondary batteries and semiconductors, even amid a global economic recession.
