The Extended Virtual Reality World (Metaverse) era is opening: more real than reality!
-Filing of patent applications related to actual feeling of contents technology has increased 19% over the most recent 10 years in key nations-
Recently, actual feeling of the contents of music videos, movies, commercial shoots, performances and exhibitions, etc. occurs in virtual space, providing a greater sense of reality than reality. Also, training of new employees is conducted in virtual spaces which are similar to actual offices. As such extended virtual reality (metaverse) services are performed without person-to-person contact and are being used by consumers, the related technologies have been getting increasing attention.
According to the U.S. market research institution Strategy Analytics, the global virtual reality and augmented reality (VR/AR) industry, including the actual feeling contents technology field which provides more actual feeling to the extended virtual reality world (metaverse), is anticipated to grow 6 times from 2020 to 2025, the scale of which would be approximately 270 billion dollars (30.3 trillion KRW).
In particular, research and development and filing of patent applications for actual feeling contents technology with which VR/AR contents can be used in extending the virtual reality world (metaverse) are increasing worldwide, in particular in the U.S, China and Korea.
*Actual feeling contents technology: to implement an interaction function between user and computer, which is needed for using services of Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR) and eXtended Reailty (XR), in order to enhance engagement with the services
According to the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), the patent application filing trend (’00 to ’20) related to actual feeling contents technology reached 31,567 cases in total among the Intellectual Property 5 countries (IP5: the 5 advanced countries who took 95% of patent application filings worldwide, Korea (KR), America (US), Japan (JP), Europe (EU) and China (CN) Patent Offices)). Especially after ’10, a rapid increase was shown, which was a 19% annual increase.
<Overall IP5 Filing Trend in relation to actual feeling contents (‘00~‘20)>
Corresponding patent application filing in Korean reached 4,524 cases in total, and after ’10, it showed a 5% growth trend in annual average.
<Entire filing trend in relation to actual feeling contents in Korea (‘00~‘20)>
In relation to the filing ratio by applicant’s nationality among the IP5 countries, the U.S. filed the most patent applications at 43.7% (13,786 cases), next came China with 19.7% (6,215 cases), which showed a narrow difference compared to Korea (14.6% (4,620cases)), Japan took 8.4 % (2,647 cases) and Europe was 8.5 % (2,697 cases), both exceeding Korea by about a half of a percentage point.
By looking at the attribute of type of applicant among IP5 filings, corporations took the greatest part; however, in Korea, individuals (13.9%) and research institutes (8.4%) took a higher rate compared to in other countries.
Overall, the amount of patent application filings by technology among IP5 countries, going in order, was providing contents (38%), connection equipment (interface) (30%), rendering (19%) and tracking (13%). The U.S. took the highest occupancy in every technology when it comes to the ratio of application filings by technology per applicant’s nationality, while Korea showed no small occupancy in the field of tracking (20%) and providing contents (18%).
